Tarot - Nine of Swords (First Posted Nov. 17, 2010)

To reach the foundation of knowing in the suit of swords – which is the “realm of air” and, by another name, the “world of thought” – is to know and to accept the fact that not all of your thoughts are conscious.  There is a whole other level of thought that arises up out of your unconscious mind and often doing so in the form of dreams (both nighttime and daytime).

To ignore or to denigrate this wealthy stratum of thoughts is to do so at your own peril and, when you really think about it, why would you?  Why would you automatically discount ideas that come through to you at night just because they speak to you through a dream?  Why would you not rather court them and see what shows up?

Why - just before you “lay me down to sleep” - would you not relax your breathing, focus your thoughts and specifically request that an answer you are searching for be revealed to you this very night whilst you sleep?

Don’t be afraid to reach your thoughts up to the moon and the stars as well as lower them into the fertile, dark ground.  Let your thoughts have range.  Let your thoughts stretch in all directions.  Let your thoughts arise from your heart as well as your mind and give all your thoughts their due justice – not just your logical, every day ones.

To believe only your conscious thoughts have value is to build a weak foundation in the world of thought and to limit yourself in a way you were not intended to be.  Open and deepen your mind and you will stand strong and firm in the realm of air.  Your foundation will be solid.

PLEASE NOTE:  This interpretation is based purely on the feelings I experience when I  focus on, and merge with, the images in the card combined with how I understand the Minor Arcana of the Rider-Waite deck dovetails with the Tree of Life in the Qabalah (as taught by Wald and Ruth Ann Amberstone, co-founders of The Tarot School in New York City, NY).
