Tarot - Eight of Swords (First Posted Nov. 3, 2010)

To know splendour  in the suit of swords – which is the “realm of air” and, by another name, the “world of thought” – is to know how to use your mind to imagine what’s “out there” based on what you know already;  to sense what lies just beyond your current mental grasp and to mentally grope your way slowly towards it in the dark.

It takes a lot of time and effort to amass a given body of knowledge and to have it planted securely in your mind.  And, if this body of knowledge is something that you are interested in – if it is alive to you – then chances are as you begin to become more and more adept at drawing upon it you can also begin to imagine and anticipate what lies ahead.  You can begin to imagine “what’s next” and you can begin opening your mind and mentally advancing towards the next piece of knowledge that will build on that which you have already worked so hard to accumulate.

The new knowledge you are reaching for with your mind may be tantalizing close and yet just slightly (and frustratingly) beyond your mental reach. The secret to knowing splendour in the world of thought is to not attempt to force the situation but to quiet your mind (free it from distractions) and to allow the knowledge you are seeking to slowly come through to you in its own time.

Don’t be surprised if you first begin to touch the edge of the knowledge you are seeking through your intuition.  Or, this new piece of knowledge may begin to come through to you in a dream.  When you finally entirely grasp that which you are reaching for - and add it to the body of knowledge you are building - you will feel joy at its presence and gratitude that such gains are possible.

PLEASE NOTE:  This interpretation is based purely on the feelings I experience when I  focus on, and merge with, the images in the card combined with how I understand the Minor Arcana of the Rider-Waite deck dovetails with the Tree of Life in the Qabalah (as taught by Wald and Ruth Ann Amberstone, co-founders of The Tarot School in New York City, NY).
